Chicago Open House Weekend 2024 - Sunday
Posted on Wed 15 January 2025 in photography
Oh, whoops, it's been awhile. Let's finish the Open House post a week and change before my next trip to Chicago (For a Distant Worlds concert this time. It's going to be cold, and I better not break another arm when I get home). Time to pull up the location history on my phone for a vague recollection of what I did.
Once again a breakfast of Dunkin and energy drinks. There wasn't much on the list of things to do on Sunday, and I was getting pretty worn out. First up was the Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier. It was such a long walk from the Red Line station (State and Grand I think) to Navy Pier, about a mile. Then Navy Pier itself is about a half mile long.
The Grand Ballroom wasn't very grand, probably from the late morning sun coming in, and glaring off the lake. Probably would look better towards golden hour. Got some random pictures of it, and wandered out to take pictures of things on the lake, mainly lighthouses, but there was a sailboat out. I was mainly delaying the walk back along Navy Pier.
Next stop was another architectural salvage place called Salvage One, out in a part of the city I'd never been to. It was basically a straight shot on the bus from Navy Pier to there, though I did have to wait awhile for the bus. The most amusing thing there was a bunch of letters from retail signage sitting around. Though there was the tub fountain in the back.
At this point, quite exhausted and not sure where to go next, I decided to say screw it, and went to the Lincoln Park Zoo and walked around. Maybe I could finally see a Pallas Cat on one of these trips, there was one there previously. But no dice. Didn't get many photos there, and I was just kind of done at that point.
Went back to the hotel (After another very long wait for a bus), and dozed until dinnertime, and once again went and got Gino's East for dinner, seemed fitting to start and end the trip there. And finally, back to Midway to catch the flight home, landing at 12:30, and finally home at 1:30.
